Chicago Mayor Richard Daley's been criticized for supporting a plan to move the Chicago Children's Museum from Navy Pier to Grant Park. At a press conference yesterday, the mayor let loose on Chicago's two major newspapers for their editorials.

Daley's main target was the Chicago Tribune. The newspaper ran an editorial Friday criticizing the mayor and the Children's Museum for its plan to take up space in Grant Park and selling its naming rights to a corporate donor. Daley says the Tribune doesn't have room to talk.

DALEY: They're advising me what to do with the city and they're going right in the tank. I love that. Well, Sun-Times is in there, too.

That's a reference to money problems plaguing both newspapers. Daley also took on freshman Alderman Brendan Reilly, who opposes the museum's proposed move.

DALEY: This is not about Mayor Daley and Brendan Reilly, this is about children. And when he has children he'll understand that some day.

Reilly's chief of staff said the alderman would have no comment.

Critics of the proposed move of the Children's Museum to Grant Park called attention Wednesday to a provision in the museum's zoning application that would allow liquor to be sold on the premises.

The provision refers to a specific area in the structure where the Children's Museum would be able to operate restaurants.

In their latest public jab at the proposal, an advocacy group and Ald. Brendan Reilly (42nd) said Wednesday the effort to open the door to liquor flies in the face of the museum's contention—frequently echoed by Mayor Richard Daley—that the proposed move is meant to benefit children.

Museum officials said Wednesday they had no plans to serve alcohol during business hours, though they were unsure if there would be alcohol at after-hours events. They said the only restaurant planned would provide healthy food and no alcohol.

Jim Law, the museum's vice president of planning and external affairs, said the language in the application was standard.

"That is patently false," said Reilly.
