City to beef up security at schools, police chief says
$5,000 rewards will be offered for tips in killings of young people
By Gary Washburn
Special police patrols are headed for troubled Chicago public schools and more than 50 officers now in desk jobs will be deployed to schools after spring break in an attempt to stem a rash of violence, police Supt. Jody Weis announced Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Rev. Michael Pfleger, the activist priest who joined Weis and Mayor Richard Daley Tuesday at an anti-gun rally, said a $5,000 reward for information will be offered to track down gunmen every time a young person is fatally shot. Officials would not disclose which schools would get the beefed-up police presence.
Police turned out in force Monday at Crane Tech High School following the fatal shooting of a student last week at the West Side school.
Ruben Ivy, 18, was killed just after school let out Friday afternoon. DeVonte Smith, 15, was charged with murder in Ivy's slaying.
Students walked out of school Monday to find themselves surrounded by police and TV cameras. Some students said Chicago police did not do enough to prevent Friday's melee, which also left another student injured after reportedly being beaten with a golf club.
Police said they acted as quickly as possible.
Chicago Public Schools officials said attendance was down Monday, even as they increased security.
So far this school year there have been 18 students in the district killed, 16 because of gun violence, officials have said.

Hey Pat, In my opinion "are they trying to kill or cripple you? where is the DAMN PROTECTION FOR YOU-- HEY DALEY ARE YOU INVOLVED IN THIS?
Pat, be very careful out there, you got some city workers that are crazy (in my opinion) out there thaT want you hurt. These people will do some crazy things- the other day I was visiting with my neighbor across the alley and watched this guy go thru my garbage cans in the alley, then he say's "F*ck he's got a F*cking shreader". I did not have my cammera with me, but from now on I will.
So Pat becareful these "RATS" are getting desperate to quiet us down,
they think it's me and you only, they do not know how many of us there are behind the scenes, "NEVER UNDERESTIMATE YOUR OPPONENT" like in "I hate all anti semitics".

Where is the protection for being a WHISTLEBLOWER !!
HEY Daley what the hell is going on??????
Are you try-ing to get the WHISTLEBLOWER hurt?
maybe we should call on the FEDS for protection,
because I too have been Retaliated against also in the NORTH DISTRICT. My court case is pending also. Example: Pat
When you ride a bicycle for the first time you fall and get hurt, then you look at your elbows, and say damn that hurt!,
then you get mad and say" thats never going to happen again, because NOW I KNOW WHAT I GOT TO DO IN COURT!" Let go after these corrupt people" hey Pat do you remember what we told JUDGE ANDERSON when we were in court AUG. 2007, I still believe in what I told the JUDGE. Where the hell is FITZGERALD at?

This last week when Principal Florence Gonzalez began the mass firing of teachers, she declared war on the communities of South Chicago and the East Side. Chosen because of her political connections rather than her qualifications, she knows little about our neighborhoods, and has shown through her actions that she cares even less about our kids- the students whose education is entrusted to her.
Teachers and students alike took action even before her term as principal expressing their dissatisfaction with her appointment. Regardless, she was rushed into position, and has been abusing her power since. She has increased police presence in the school, using money for security instead of much needed educational materials. Student morale is low, and those teachers that encouraged and motivated students to actually be excited about their education have been terminated.
She has fired the ONLY bilingual history and math teachers, and those who run after school activities, INCLUDING the faculty sponsor of STUDENT COUNCIL!
Students responded with outrage, going as far as to plan a walk out. Principal Florence Gonzalez reacted with more of the same, warning students that they would be suspended, and that paddy wagons had already been called.
OUR STUDENTS DO NOT NEED A F##### PRINCIPAL TURNING THEIR SCHOOL HIGHWAYS INTO A PRISON. THEIR EXPRESSION OF DISSATISFACTION SHOULD BE MET WITH CONSIDERATION, NOT WITH THREATS OF POLICE ACTION.
WE DO NOT WANT A PRINCIPAL WHO OBVIOUSLY NOT ONLY DOES NOT CARE FOR OUR CHILDREN, BUT TREATS THEM WITH DISDAIN.
I just want to graduate that's all............... |
