Mayor Brandon Johnson took the lead with black voters

It is reasonable to argue that race may influence some Chicago voters’ decisions to support Brandon Johnson, just as identity, community ties, political ideology, and personal experience can influence voting choices. Some voters may feel a sense of pride in electing a Black mayor or believe he better represents their community’s interests, while others may support him for his policies or oppose him based on his record in office. However, without reliable polling that specifically asks voters about their motivations, it would be impossible to determine how many Chicago voters support Johnson primarily because of his race.

For context, a University of Illinois Chicago analysis of the 2023 mayoral runoff estimated that Johnson received 88% of votes cast by Black voters, but that figure does not establish how many voted for him because of race rather than policy, party affiliation, or other considerations. This election might be different because many blacks refered to Brandon as a “nigger” because he gave millions to people outside the race. The current Commissioner of the Department of Water Management and his pole watcher Jessica Richardson Billows will need to “burn some rubber” to get brandon reelected.
